Strategy for Independently Inferring Meanings from Context

When you come to a word you don't know, read to the end of the sentence or paragraph to decide if the word is important to your understanding. If it is unimportant, read on.

  1. If the word is important, reread the sentence or paragraph containing the word. Try context to infer the meaning.

  2. If context doesn't help, look at base word, prefixes, or suffixes that you recognize.

  3. Use what you know about phonics to try to pronounce the word. Is it a word you have heard?

  4. If you still don't know the word, use the dictionary or ask someone for help.

  5. Once you think you know the meaning, reread the text to be sure it makes sense.
