My Definition

Fluency is more than reading words quickly and accuretly. Components of fluency include accurate word recognition, expression & voice, phrasing, smoothness, and pace.

Characteristics of Students Who Don’t Read Fluently

  • Reads slowly or too quickly

  • Guess at words based on beginning sounds

  • Doesn’t remember a word the second or third time in one passage

  • Doesn’t break multi syllabic word into syllables or root words to decode them

  • Points at words while reading

  • Repeats words or phrases

  • Reads with no expression

  • Reads in a word by word manner

  • Ignores punctuation marks

  • Doesn’t remember what they have read
